Signed as a free agent out of Japan on Nov. 18, 2000.

2003 Highlights:
  • Batted .312 with 29 2B, 8 3B, 13 HR and 34 SB
  • Was fourth in the AL with 12 outfield assists
  • Hit his first career grand slam on July 18 at Kansas City to put Mariners ahead 6-3 in the 9th. Hit second grand slam Aug. 15 vs. Boston
  • Had hitting streaks of 19 (June 4-24), 13 (May 8-22) and 9 (April 9-17)
  • Batted .359 (75-209) against left-handed pitching, the highest mark in the AL for a left-handed hitter
  • Led Majors in All-Star ballotting for third-consecutive season
  • Recorded 212 hits, becoming just the third player in MLB history with over 200 hits in each of his first three seasons
  • Led Majors with 66 multi-hit games. In the AL, ranked second in hits, seventh in batting average, seventh in runs, and fifth in stolen bases
