Acquired:
Signed as a seven-year major league free agent in December 2001. Signed a two-year extension in 2003 (runs through 2005).

2004 Highlights:
* Drove in a career-high 82 runs and played in a career-high 152 games.
* Walked 72 times against only 48 strikeouts.
* Hit a career-high .284 and was over .300 for much of the season before a late-season slump.

Career Highlights:
* Hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 9th inning in the A's record breaking 20th consecutive victory in 2002.
* Hit homerun in Game Three of 2002 ALDS against Minnesota. Hit .500 in that series and scored five runs.
* Former catcher with Boston Red Sox; was converted to first by the A's.
* One of the league's most patient hitters.
