Shortstop Drew Cumberland rocketed up many prospect lists this summer with a brilliant showcase tour…
Draft Q&A: Drew Cumberland
Drew Cumberland: I felt like I did really well and got a chance to show what I had. What I got out of it was that I had to play hard every play because you never know who's watching.
Scout.com: Which event do you think you had your best showing at and why?
Drew Cumberland: I think I had my best showing in Atlanta and in Wilmington because they were both long events and I just had more chances to do well.
Scout.com: If you had describe your overall game, what are some important things you'd point out and basically what should people know about your style of play?
Drew Cumberland: Well, my speed is my top thing overall and I'm quick in the infield. And, I'm a good line drive hitter who doesn't strike out very much and finds a way on base. And, my style of play is that I work hard day in and day out.
Scout.com: What would you say is your strongest attribute as a player and why?
Drew Cumberland: My speed is my strongest thing because I am such a threat on the bases and can lay down a bunt at any time.
Scout.com: Have you committed to college yet? If so, which one and have you thought ahead about the decision you could have to make between going pro and college?
Drew Cumberland: I have not committed to a college yet but have many in mind. And, with the pros, the college situation I'm just playing everything by ear.
Scout.com: What do you feel are the most significant improvements you have to make over the next year and how do you plan to correct them?
Drew Cumberland: I need to work on taking the ball the other way and get a little better arm strength and do that by going out and working hard every day.
Scout.com: It seems that you were a player that moved up a lot on many prospects lists this summer. What differences do you think there were in your game that got you the added attention?
Drew Cumberland: I think I just happened to play good in front of the right people. And, like I said before, I just went out there and gave 100% in every at-bat and every play.
Scout.com: What do you feel is the most important thing an organization should know about you that they might not see at first glance?
Drew Cumberland: I think they should know that I do have some power for my size.
Scout.com: What big league player would you best compare yourself to in terms of style and why?
Drew Cumberland: I'd probably compare myself to Derek Jeter. I'm sort of a leader on the field and off. I always set a good example.
Scout.com: How would you describe your approach at the plate?
Drew Cumberland: I'm very, very aggressive.
Scout.com: You've been praised for your defensive skills by many scouts. What do you think makes you such a strong defender?
Drew Cumberland: I think it's because I hustle for every ball and have no hesitation to go get a ball. Play with no fear is what my coaches have told me since I was a freshman.
Scout.com: How do you feel playing against such strong competition has helped you as a player?
Drew Cumberland: I feel like it has helped me tremendously. Facing 94-95 MPH fastballs and just seeing those caliber of players makes me play that much harder because I want to be the best. So, I'm going to work 100 percent against every one.
