Only one player has hit over .400 over the last week leading into the All-Star Break, and had a meme created in his honor sweep across the internet (just search #BusterHugs) faster than a Sharknado: Buster Posey.
The San Francisco Giants backstop caught a no-hitter, courtesy of Tim Lincecum, and hit a scorching .483 over the last seven days, going 14-for-29 with one home run, four doubles and eight RBIs, scoring four runs while striking out just three times.
Posey’s batting average led all big leaguers over the past week, as did his 14 hits. Posey’s four two-baggers were the second-most in the majors, as were his eight RBIs – just two behind Cincinnati’s Brandon Phillips.
Posey’s .724 slugging percentage was 11th in the majors and third in the National League, while his OPS (1.191) was second in the Senior Circuit and sixth overall.
After the Giants were swept by the New York Mets to start off the week, the G-Men ran off three straight wins against the San Diego Padres, before dropping the finale of the four-game series down in southern California, 10-1, to enter the All-Star Break.
Aside from catching The Freak’s first career no-no, Posey played key roles in San Francisco’s three straight W’s, going 2-for-5 with one RBI in the Giants’ 4-2 victory, driving in an insurance run with two outs and two on in the top of the eighth.
On July 12, Posey went 2-for-4, driving in half of San Francisco’s 10 runs in a 10-1 stomping of the Friars. After Posey lofted a sacrifice fly to left in the top of the third to tie things up at one run apiece.
With San Francisco up just 3-1 in the top of the sixth, Posey drove a bases-loaded line-drive single to right to plate two, and in the top of the seventh, Posey capped off a five-run rally with a two-run double, his 26th of the season.
