The Los Angeles Dodgers have won seven of their last 10 games, and have gone 4-3 over the past week, with two of those wins coming thanks to the arm of Clayton Kershaw -- this weeks’ Scout.com Player of the Week.
Kershaw has in fact won each of his last three decisions, and four of his past seven, but over the past week, he’s been simply scintillating.
The 25-year old left out of Dallas, Tex., started the week with a complete game shutout in the thin air of Denver, holding the Colorado Rockies to just four hits while striking out eight in an 8-0 win for the Blue Crew.
No Rockies player reached as far as second base until the bottom of the sixth, as Kershaw held Colorado without a single extra-base hit, tallying five one-two-three innings.
Kershaw next took the mound on July 7 against the rival San Francisco Giants and tossed eight innings, striking out three and allowing just one run as the Dodgers erased a 1-1 tie with a three-run rally in the top of the ninth to give Kershaw his second win in as many tries.
Only one other starting pitcher in the past week has allowed fewer than one earned run – Tampa Bay’s Matt Moore -- but Kershaw (0.53 ERA in the past seven days) has held opposing hitters to a .127 batting average in 3.2 more innings of work, as opposed to Moore’s .159 over 13.1 frames. Kershaw’s 11 strikeouts are tied for third in the majors over the past seven days, but his WHIP – 0.47 – is the best in the bigs for pitchers with at least two appearances over the past seven days.
During the past week, the prospective All-Star Game starter crossed the 1,100-strikeout barrier, and looks to be well in line for his second Cy Young Award, pacing the majors in ERA (1.89), innings pitched (138.1), starting appearances (19) and opponents batting average (.186), while ranking second in WHIP (0.90) and sixth in strikeouts (129).
