The Cleveland Indians entered play on Monday 2.5 games up on the reigning American League champion Detroit Tigers, and wouldn't be that far up were it not for righty Justin Masterson.
Masterson earns this week's Scout.com Player of the Week (May 13-19) thanks to his two-win, 20-strikeout week for the Tribe, tossing a complete-game, 1-0 shutout on May 13 against the New York Yankees and then finishing up the week with 7.0 innings of scoreless ball against the Seattle Mariners on May 19, not allowing a single extra-base hit to either team.
Masterson's 20 Ks paced all pitchers over the seven-day stretch, as did his 0.00 ERA and 16.0 innings of work, to go along with a sparkling 0.75 WHIP.
In total, Masterson allowed just seven combined hits to the Yankees and the Mariners, walking just five., lowering his season ERA from 3.67 to 2.83.
The past week have helped to cement Masterson as one of the best hurlers in the Major Leagues over the past 30 days, during which he ranks second in the bigs with 46 strikeouts and fifth in innings pitched (43.0), while holding opposing hitters to a .206 batting average.
